Independent Senator Nick Xenophon accuses Greens of last-minute lies over preferences in newspaper ad (ABC) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

A battle for Senate seats in South Australia is heating up between the Greens and independent Nick Xenophon.

The Greens have run a full-page newspaper advertisement claiming a vote for Senator Xenophon is a vote for Tony Abbott and the Liberals.

Senator Xenophon said the claim was untrue, because he was sharing his preferences equally between Liberal and Labor.

“I would rather lose an election than have to lie to win,” he said.

“I can’t say the same about the Greens.

“Let me be clear, my Senate preferences have been split right down the middle, if and only if I have excess votes to be distributed.”

With six Senate places to be decided by South Australian voters at tomorrow’s federal poll, Labor and the Liberals are set to take two each and Senator Xenophon and Senator Sarah Hanson-Young are fighting to be returned, with the chance the major parties might get a third seat or that complex preference deals might let another minor candidate into the upper house.
