A man is in an induced coma after he was repeatedly kicked in the head during a vicious attack in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

Police have been told that the 39-year-old was involved in an argument with two men in Cowper Street, Goulburn on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses saw the pair picking the man up and throwing him into the ground, head first, before repeatedly kicking his head, police say.

The man was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital before being flown to St George Hospital, where he remains in an induced coma.

Police are appealing for any witnesses of the assault to contact them.

One of the men is described as Caucasian, aged in his late 30s or early 40s, with shoulder-length hair.

The second man is also of Caucasian appearance, with a thin build and was seen wearing a baseball cap with sunglasses on the top.
