The newly retained LNP member for , George Christensen, says Queensland’s mining industry will regain confidence under a Coalition government.
Mr Christensen claimed victory in the north Queensland seat after beating Labor candidate Bronwyn Taha by more than 6 per cent.
Ms Taha conceded defeat earlier tonight.
Palmer United Party candidate Ian Ferguson polled strongly throughout the mining-dominated electorate, collecting more than 10 per cent of the vote.
Mr Christensen says National Party representatives will be integral in a Tony Abbott government in fighting for regional Australia over the next three years.
“The National Party is there to get a fair share for the regions,” he said.
“The Liberal Party – sure they’ve got some regional representation, but really it’s the National Party’s view to be fighting for the country areas like the Mackay region.
“We will take up the fight for the country and get a fair share for the regions.”
Mr Christensen says a Coalition government will also improve the economic stability in the state’s north.
“One of the big things the Liberal-National Coalition will do is going to do is give some confidence back to the mining sector,” he said.
Meanwhile, the LNP’s Ewen Jones also retained the north Queensland seat of for the LNP by a margin of more than 5 per cent.
Defeated Labor candidate Cathy O’Toole has called on Mr Jones to stand up for the people of Townsville in the next three years.
