Pair charged over stolen memorial vases (AAP) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

A man and a woman have been arrested and charged over the theft of hundreds of brass flower vases from a NSW crematorium.

Police say the 496 vases were taken from memorial gardens at the crematorium in Unanderra, on the state’s south coast, on Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.

The vases were stolen from three separate memorial walls, including 190 from an area specifically for ex-servicemen and women.

The vases were attached to brass name plates that cover interred ashes and more than 50 name plates were damaged during the theft, police said in a statement.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 45-year-old Woonona man and a 40-year-old Unanderra woman on Friday.

The man has been charged with larceny, receive/dispose stolen property, and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Saturday.

The woman was charged with larceny and granted conditional bail to appear in the same court on October 1.
