Tasmania’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Tim Ellis, has been charged over a three-car accident that killed a woman earlier this year.
Mr Ellis, 58, was driving near Lovely Banks on the Midland Highway on March 24 when he crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a woman’s hatchback in the overtaking lane, police say.
The 27-year-old Launceston woman died at the scene, while Mr Ellis was taken to hospital for a broken leg.
A 44-year-old female passenger, reportedly Mr Ellis’s wife Anita Smith, also suffered minor injuries.
Mr Ellis’s car hit a third car towing a trailer but its two occupants were not hurt.
Police say Mr Ellis has been charged by summons with cause death by negligent driving.
He will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.
