Tough talk on Solomon but bookies tip Coalition (ABC) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

The main contenders for the Territory’s urban seat of Solomon are keeping up the tough talk as the hours count down to the official close of polls.

Labor’s Luke Gosling says he’s been encouraged by the feedback he’s had at the polls so far this morning and he believes he has a good chance of winning the seat.

“You know, I’m really proud of my campaign team and the way we’ve kept the fight up right to the end,” he said.

But the bookies have it as an easy win for Country Liberals candidate, and present incumbent, Natasha Griggs.

Sports Bet has her to win at $ 1.10, while Labor’s Luke Gosling’s chances have lengthened from $ 4.50 last week to $ 6 today.

Natasha Griggs has placed her vote in Palmerston, where she is already receiving congratulations from voters.

She’s spending the day trying to convince voters they’ll have a better outcome if they have a Member who is in government.

“We won’t be in opposition; we will be in government,” Ms Griggs said.

“And the only way to get a hospital in Palmerston, the only way to get some other … infrastructure, for the people of Darwin and Palmerston, is to have a Member in government.”

Political pundits say the seat could be close, despite the bookies’ predictions.

Former Territory Labor shadow minister Ken Parish says both party leaders have been up to Darwin in the past few weeks matching each other on promises, which he says they wouldn’t be doing unless internal polling showed it was “incredibly close”.
