NGV extends opening hours as Monet’s Garden exhibition wraps up (ABC) - ( 4U5TR4L14 )

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) says the exhibition Monet’s Garden is set to become its second most popular exhibition ever.

The Winter Masterpiece series opened in May and features more than 60 works devoted to the artist’s garden, Giverny, in France.

More than 330,000 people have seen the collection, equal to the 2009 Salvador Dali: Liquid Desire exhibition.

The first Winter Masterpieces exhibition, The Impressionists, remains the NGV’s most popular show, attracting around 380,000 visitors.

Monet’s Garden closes this Sunday but the exhibition will remain open until midnight Saturday to cope with the demand.

Gallery director Tony Ellwood says he is not surprised by the exhibition’s popularity.

“It’s Monet, the father of impressionism, French impressionism, and it’s around the great and famous garden that he loved,” he said.

“It’s a pretty compelling theme and I think it’s got very broad appeal.”
