Businesses in Ballarat are being warned about counterfeit $ 50 notes being used in the city.
Several fake notes were handed to police which are believed to have been passed at a local service station earlier this month.
Unlike genuine polymer notes, the fakes crumple like paper and all have the same serial number.
Investigators believe further attempts may be made to use similar notes in the community.
Anyone who believes they are in possession of counterfeit currency, or has had notes passed or attempted to be passed to them is urged to contact police, while anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
